staying focused:

medhurdles:

  • study prep 📝 : set up your work area with everything you will need so you won’t be tempted to get up [water, pens, things to keep hair out of face, snack, headphones, etc]
  •  there’s an app for that📱 : pomodoro timers or similar apps (focusNow, forest) that keep time not only discourage phone use but also keep you working in good quantities: 25 min work // 5 min break! 🕓
  • choose an appropriate environment 📚 ☕️: i’ve found that working at my desk in my dorm isn’t as productive as when i go somewhere with the intention to study. I study in coffee shops, libraries, places where it isn’t too loud but there is a studying environment with other people working hard, so it makes me feel accountable.
  • …but not the bed 💤: your brain creates associations with things you do in the places you do them. this means that your bed should be solely a place for rest and winding down– by working on your bed regularly, you begin associating it with a place that could be stressful for you, and can potentially interfere with your sleep. science. plus you won’t accidentally fall asleep at a desk.
  • schedule your work 📅: create regular blocks of working time during the week. (example: after class on thursdays, you will go to the library and work for two hours before returning to your dorm. and then that will become part of your regular schedule every thursday for as long as you have that class.) i love using the passion planner 😍 or theorganisedstudent‘s 24/7 weekly planner
  • down-time 🎉: don’t forget to schedule time for yourself, you deserve breaks and your mental health is important! whether that be simply self-caring or going out with friends, having something to look forward to can motivate you to finish your work in a timely fashion.
